At DE WALKERS, we believe good architecture is not about copying a style exactly — it is about understanding its principles and intelligently adapting them to suit location, budget, and modern living conditions.
One of our projects in Officer involved the delivery of a Hampton-style custom home in a non-coastal environment, where the design intent was to capture the essence of Hampton architecture while ensuring it remained practical and cost-effective for an inland residential setting.
This required a careful balance between architectural authenticity and real-world construction considerations.
Interpreting Hampton Style in a Non-Coastal Context
Although Hampton style is traditionally associated with coastal regions, its core design language is defined by:
- light colour palettes
- horizontal façade lines
- gable roof forms
- open, airy interior spaces
- strong indoor–outdoor connection
In this project, these principles were carefully studied and selectively incorporated to suit an inland suburban environment rather than a coastal location.
The design goal was to achieve a timeless Hampton aesthetic without overcomplicating the structure or introducing unnecessary construction cost.
Exterior Design — Simplified Hampton Expression
The external design focused on key Hampton characteristics while maintaining construction efficiency.
Key features included:
- classic weatherboard-style façade (painted horizontal cladding)
- clean horizontal line detailing
- light and neutral colour palette to enhance brightness
- simplified gable roof form for cost efficiency and structural practicality
While initial design considerations explored more complex steep roof structures and layered roof forms, these were refined to a more efficient gable solution without compromising the overall Hampton identity.
This approach allowed the project to retain architectural character while maintaining budget control and buildability.
Front Presence — Traditional Hampton Influence
The front elevation was designed to maintain a strong, welcoming presence through:
- a defined front porch
- balanced proportions
- traditional façade composition
Rather than introducing modern or overly minimal detailing, the design focused on maintaining a classic, timeless residential appearance consistent with Hampton principles.
Interior Design — Light, Space & Family Living
Internally, the home was designed to support modern family living with a strong emphasis on openness and natural light.
Key interior elements included:
- high ceilings to enhance spatial volume
- open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas
- light interior colour palette
- warm and soft lighting design throughout
The result is a home that feels bright, comfortable, and highly functional for everyday family use.
Kitchen & Joinery — Shaker Style Detailing
A major design focus was the kitchen and custom joinery detailing.
The cabinetry was designed using classic shaker-style principles Shaker cabinet design, including:
- framed cabinet doors
- clean and simple profiles
- soft neutral tones
- practical layout for daily use
This design language was extended into feature cabinetry areas to maintain consistency throughout the home.
Feature Wine Bar & Cellar Design
A standout feature of this project was the custom-designed wine bar and cellar area.
This space included:
- integrated wine storage
- glass-front wine display cellar
- curved feature door detailing
- shaker-style cabinetry integration
This area was designed to function as both a practical storage space and a visual feature within the living environment.
Lighting Design — Creating Warmth and Atmosphere
Lighting was carefully designed to enhance the Hampton aesthetic through:
- soft warm lighting tones
- layered lighting approach
- feature lighting in key living zones
This ensured the home maintained a warm, inviting atmosphere consistent with Hampton-style interiors.
Indoor–Outdoor Connection
Even in a non-coastal setting, the design emphasised a strong indoor–outdoor relationship.
This included:
- seamless access to outdoor entertaining areas
- integrated alfresco BBQ zone
- open connection from living spaces to exterior zones
These features support modern Australian family living while remaining consistent with Hampton lifestyle principles.
Balcony & Traditional Detailing Approach
Where balcony elements were introduced, a traditional design language was maintained through:
- simple, classic balustrade detailing
- avoidance of modern minimal railing systems
- consistency with overall façade styling
This helped preserve architectural cohesion across the entire home.
Design Outcome — Hampton Style Adapted for Real Australian Living
This project demonstrates that Hampton architecture is not limited to coastal locations.
When correctly interpreted, it can be successfully adapted to inland environments by focusing on:
- proportion and balance
- material selection
- colour palette
- spatial flow
- controlled detailing
The result is a home that maintains Hampton identity while remaining practical, cost-aware, and suited to everyday family living.
